Fear, Fun, Focus
Happy Friday! I know that my subscribers in Europe and Asia are disappointed as its Saturday already, but this teaser chapter will ultimately be based on a post I did in June of 2019 and then turned it into a short talk at last year’s Frontiers Health conference. Now enjoy the OG post below..
“Cultures rest on spoken and unspoken norms. Think of team culture like a web. You can take out one piece of it, and it will re-form to its overall shape “ — Kristi Hedges in Forbes
Just do a search on Amazon Books for “high performance teams” and you will get over 20,000 results — why so many books have been written? Because its ultimately people who make shit happen in this very unpredictable global and ever changing environment.
While team dynamics and human behavior are complex topics, there are some key elements which I will layout according to Friederik Fabritius, eloquently stated 3Fs: Fun, Fear, Focus
Fun…
is a fleeing feeling but an important one for teams to adopt and balance especially as every human being is unique. Fun is knowing that the whole team is behind a mission and a purpose and every day there will be challenges to solve. Fun is having curiosity, followed by intellectual conversations and challenging each other constructively. Fun is when trust grows and there is mutual respect across the team. And yes.. fun is also grabbing a few drinks, meditating or cooking together oh and… of course doing a few selfies :) Disconnecting to reconnect with yourself is also fun but thats for another post.

Fear…
and I am not talking about “bad fear” that is anchored into a million “what if this or that happens”. I am talking about that adrenaline rush to leap forward and explore the unknown. I am talking about those aha moments when each team member knows exactly what they are accountable for and the engine revs in excitement. I am talking about those bad news brought up early and the team is all hands on deck to use their basal ganglia activating their built up habits of getting shit done.. I am talking about that sense of urgency, that drives the team members to its highest potential.

Focus…
With fun and good fear anything is possible. Focus brings the together clear common goals, accountability and transparency. Focus allows to be in the zone with that perfect Etude in E Minor (Chopin). Focus is when everyone’s voice is heard irrespective of unnaturally created hierarchies. Focus is respect towards each other with working sessions filled with clear outcomes. Focus is when a team member needs help and you swing into action to teach. Focus is intentional execution.
